Comment about multimedia guide Paris (week 5 exercise)

The story that I have chosen is about a guide to Paris, which an Australian journalist give some tips of unusual places to go. The multimedia material can be found in Herald Sun website. The first thing that I didn`t like was advertising everywhere and a really common picture of Paris showing the Eiffel. They also use mixed typology which is really annoying as the site has already a lot of elements that calls attention.

In addition, the article that introduces the multimedia guide could have more details and information such as links to web pages about Paris or with maps (from Google Earth, for instance) of the places that the guide is talking about. There are also few interactive tools in the website. The only ones that I notice were links to bookmark the page and that you are able to choose which part of the video you want to watch.

Now, talking about content of the multimedia guide…well I have to say that I didn’t enjoy again…Actually, the tips that Bryce Corbett gives are quite interesting but how this content is represented is the issue. First of all, instead of a movie they use audio and pictures. There is no problem with this combination when the photos fit with the content. However, sometimes this doesn’t happen. It`s seems to me that they use some pictures which there is nothing to do with the topic that Corbett is talking about…Although I have never been in Paris, I could notice that some photos were being used just not to have a gap.

Anyway, let`s talk about good things in the multimedia project: speech. This for me was the best part because I felt comfortable while he was explaining about each place and their peculiarities. I also enjoyed the map that they use to illustrate Paris.

Notes about reading `Barons to Bloggers`

The Media (Radio, Television, Newspaper and Magazines) have always been a center of influence for societies all around the world. Part of the values, opinions and trends that Western countries developed in different moments can be based on what kind of information was selected and produced by these medias. However, since the arrival of the Internet this process have been changed.

According to the book ` Barons to Bloggers`, the audience is now engaged with the process of producing information and opinions. Nowadays, with the development of tools like blogs, an ordinary person can express and share beliefs and ideas with people from different places around the globe.

To my mind, the growing of the Internet is also related to the fact that most of the societies got tired of just receive news without interaction. That`s why readers, viewers and listeners are choosing new alternatives of medias not just to be informed but also to be able to participate and fell that what they think is important to the whole process of news.

Something that really grabbed my attention while I was reading this book was when the concept `Balance of Power` was mentioned. As the author Jay Rosen explained, the medias such as radio, TV and newspapers were in the past the only ones to report opinions and cause a certain impact in our lives. However, the transformation and democratization of the media created new centers of influence and made the balance…`unbalanced`.

Although is a fact that the internet brought development in many ways, I keep asking myself if this new press of instantaneous information can not affect one of the main responsibilities of journalism, which is to supervise the Government? The way that people consume information will not have an effect on the quality and accuracy of it?

I hope this democratization in the press will not just increase the participation of the public as gatekeepers but also as supervisors of Institutions such as the Judiciary and the State. In my view, the society will need to be more aware and conscious to keep the quality and presicion in the production of news.

About myself…

Well…is such a hard work when you have to talk about yourself..but I will try to summarize. I am 24 years old and I`ve graduated in Journalism last year in Brazil. As a final project, me and two other friends produced a documentary of 15 minutes, which describes a bit of the complex culture and issues that the Gipsies have in Brazil. At the same time, we interviwed people from the goverment to explain what kind of projects and policies are being taken to help this community. To work with documentaries and image is one of my dreams, as I really enjoy cinema and photography. I am also interested in  writing about social issues..basically, I enjoy to write about things that will, in some way, affect citizens…in other words..real people. One of my goals is to work in a magazine which is awared and focus to this.

Talking about my professional background, I worked for a website as a journalist trainee for two years. While I was there, I used to produce articles for the site and for a national news radio. During this period, I learnt how to deal with the pressure of dead-lines and i improved my skills with online journalism text. Trought this experience, I got more interested in learn how to produce texts and articles for different kinds of medias.

At Swinburne, I intend to improve my skills in everything that is linked to online journalism and that can help me to produce information in a different and interactive way.
